Cull’s delicate colours at their finest. With the re-commissioning of HMS MONARCH at Portsmouth on 7 April 1914 the 2nd Battle Squadron of the Home Fleet was complete. Flying his flag in HMS ORION (Captain F C Dreyer RN), Rear Admiral Commanding 2nd Battle Squadron, Rear Admiral Sir Robert Arbuthnot Bt MVO, had an impressive collection of modern dreadnoughts under his command: HMS ORION, HMS THUNDERER (Captain T J Jackson CB CBE RN), HMS MONARCH (Captain E Hyde Smith RN) and HMS CONQUEROR (Captain N C Palmer CVO ADC RN). This watercolour has been in Canada for some 80 years and surfaced in Ottawa towards the end of 2002.
